Vote for common sense, safety for everyone, and a leader who isn’t afraid to stand up and speak out.
I’m committed to common-sense ideas that keep Burien on track and continue making our city safer for everyone. I will keep standing up to those who try to bring harmful policies back into our community. If that means shaking things up, then so be it.
We are fortunate to have a wonderful new police chief leading our deputies. Chief Calabrese’s vision, dedication, and leadership are already making a positive impact on our community. At the same time, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to our deputies for their hard work, service, and unwavering commitment to keeping our city safe. Both have played vital roles in shaping Burien’s success this past year, despite the challenges imposed by King County.
While I fully support our police department and the important work they do, I am also determined to work towards a future where Burien has its own independent police department that answers to Burien, not King County. A prime example of an issue that harms our city is the county's refusal to enforce our camping ordinance, despite a judge dismissing the county's claim that our ordinance was unconstitutional.
In March of 2024, the council adopted an updated camping ordinance. KCSO thereafter refused to allow BPD to enforce it. By March 14th, we had our first death by drug overdose since our camping ordinance was adopted but no longer enforced.
The number of drug overdoses continued to rise among our homeless population, while the King County Executive and the King County Sheriff’s Office prevented our deputies from enforcing the 2024 version of our camping ordinance.
(which allowed camping at night if shelter beds weren’t available)
While we had people dying of drug overdoses at the encampments around City Hall, another encampment quickly gained the attention of residents and King County. This one, however, was on King County property within our city. It started in March 2024 and was removed by King County in October 2024.
In September of 2024 despite a judge dismissing KCSO lawsuit against us over our camping ordinance, KCSO continued to not enforce our camping ordinance.
Our lawsuit against KCSO for breach of contract, due to their refusal to enforce the 2024 version of the camping ordinance, is still in the courts.
While continuing to stand up for our residents and businesses, pushing back against King County, and now having the support of the majority of the council (at least on this subject), I was finally able to get a complete ban on camping passed in our city in January 2025.
And yes, this new ordinance is being enforced by our police department, which is contracted through KCSO.
